Relationship Between Papillary Muscle Size and Benefit to Cardiac Function 57
in Mitral Valve Replacement with Chordal Preservation
Chisato Izumi MD, Yoshihiro Himura MD, Kanji Iga MD, Hiromitsu Gen MD, Masashi Komeda MD, Yuichi Ueda MD, Takashi Konishi MD To evaluate the effect of papillary muscle (PM) size on cardiac function after mitral valve replacement (MVR) with chordal preservation, the PM cross-sectional area and postoperative fractional shortening of the septolateral, anteroposterior and vertical dimensions were measured by echocardiography. The larger PMs were associated with better fractional shortening of the left ventricle in the septolateral dimension, but not in the anteroposterior or vertical dimensions. This discrepancy may be related to the direction in which the PMs are suspended in our technique. The present study indicated that PM size may be used as a factor to predict the benefits of chordal preservation in MVR. |
