A method of mitral valve repair is described for correcting mitral regurgitation with or without mitral stenosis. It consists of the implantation of an incomplete prosthetic ring covered with autologous pericardium and ‘U-on-side’ suture annuloplasty at both the commissures, but without any complex chordal repair. The technique was used to repair 107 mitral valves over a 10-year period from January 1988 to December 1997. Thirty-seven patients had concomitant procedures for aortic and/or tricuspid valve lesions. Only one hospital death occurred among 70 cases of isolated mitral valve repair. One patient required reoperation due to an unacceptable degree of hemolysis. The patients were followed up from one to 10 years. This technique of mitral valve repair is simple to perform, does not require complex chordal procedures, provides very gratifying results, and the repaired valve appears to function well, even after 10 years.
