Seventy-two patients (41 males, 31 females; mean age 60.5 ± 11.9 years) with mitral degenerative insufficiency underwent quadrangular resection of the posterior leaflet and annulus plication via a pledgetted suture over a Teflon patch (the ‘double-Teflon technique’). There was one immediate death, and the 72-month actuarial survival was 94.5%. The left atrial (p = 0.0001) and ventricular diastolic (p = 0.0003) diameters were also reduced.
