Drugs or hormones that contract or relax the tissues that comprise the aortic valve, and thereby change its geometry, may be capable of interfering with the cross-talk between structures within the valve. We have investigated the contractile response or aortic valve leaflets to commonly encountered vasoactive agents, and show that cusp tissue possesses a diverse range of receptors that are capable of mediating contraction.
