Ronald C. Elkins MD, Mary M. Lane PhD, Carolyn McCue RN

The Ross operation has proven to be the preferred aortic valve replacement in children. Actuarial survival is 92 ± 3% at 12 years, actuarial freedom from autograft valve degeneration is 90 ± 4% at 12 years, from autograft replacement is 93 ± 3% at 12 years, from homograft valve replacement is 90 ± 4% at 12 years, and from all valve-related morbidity is 79 ± 5% at 11 years. The Ross operation allows the child to have an excellent lifestyle with minimal restrictions and minimal need for continuing medical care, other than routine surveillance.
