Atopic Dermatitis as a Risk Factor for Acute Native Valve Endocarditis
Koji Onoda MD, Hitoshi Mizutani MD, Takuya Komada MD, Shinji Kanemitsu MD, Takatsugu Shimono MD, Hideto Shimpo MD, Isao Yada MD Takatsugu Shimono MD, Hideto Shimpo MD, Isao Yada MD Two rare cases are reported of acute native valve endocarditis (ANVE) complicated by recurrent cutaneous infections caused by severe atopic dermatitis (AD) which were treated successfully. Colonization of Staphylococcus aureus is commonly observed in skin lesions of AD patients, and scratching of the pruritic skin lesions may lead to reiterative bacteremia. Thus, uncontrolled AD is a risk factor for ANVE. In addition to surgical treatment to correct the hear lesions, intensive postoperative antibiotic therapy and skin management for AD are indispensable in these patients. |
