Recurrent Endocarditis in Silver-Coated Heart Valve Prosthesis
Henrik K. Kjaergard MD, Jens Tingleff MD, Ulrik Abildgaard MD, Gösta Pettersson MD

Recurrent early prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) with Staphylococcus epidermidis developed twice in a single patient following implantation of two silver-coated aortic valve prostheses. Implantation of all types of prosthetic valve is encumbered with a risk of endocarditis, and transesophageal echocardiography investigation is mandatory if PVE is suspected. Although silver has been shown to have bacteriostatic actions, the clinical efficacy of the silver-coated sewing ring in heart valve prosthesis implantation is, as yet, unknown.
